Nice article. You have a kind of privileged position to be able to translate between languages and cultures, even though it was hard earned. I look forward to learning more from you.

I hope you will continue to make podcasts. I'd much rather listen to you than to non-RP British accents.

My teen son told me that Cambridge, not Oxford, was known for producing spies. Am I misinformed?

Historically, correct. But notably, as far as I recall, all were impeccably English and committed to communism, as long as it was in distant lands.

Thank you - what a great read. You are an ornament to both British journalism and to achieving a better understanding of modern day China.

Cindy, I know you are one of the many who don’t think I am a spy or a mouthpiece for the CCP…but I want you to know, like you I am not a spy.

When I went to sea as exchange to the Chinese Naval Academy, my political officer, Lt Ban Ba Dao (how was I to know Ban Ba Dao was the most famous clown on Taiwan TV?), Lt Ban Ba Dao suspected all Americans of being soft on communism, so he assigned a Midshipman who was to be a future Political Officer to the rack only inches above mine.

My upper bunk-mate tried to cure me of all spy-tendencies. I’m sure you know the feeling.

If you are not ignorant of China…and if you are honest about China…then it is inevitable you will be called a spy or a mouthpiece. Be strong.

do you worry about things getting worse for British Chinese over the coming years? US is well on the path to alienating ABCs

If you were a spy, you would stand for Parliament at the next election. Obviously you have to stand for Reform.
